Performances!

Thurs., Jan. 3, 2002
San Francisco, CA

The Best of Broadway presents
Fiddler on the Roof
at the ORPHEUM Theater

This is one of my favorite musicals--it has great songs and a touching story. And the Orpheum theater is splendid--I'm so glad it has been preserved! Although I love Fiddler, this particular production seemed comparatively cold and un-inspired, not nearly as warm and sentimental as community theater productions I have seen in the past.

Steve Silver's BEACH BLANKET BABYLON
at Club Fugazi

Lots of fun--although groan-inducing and hackneyed in parts, the enthusiasm of the cast, the unabashed gawdiness of the sets for even the smallest of jokes, and the over-the-top silliness of the production certainly made up for it. I don't know why, but I just loved those French poodles!!! At the very end, somehow the show morphed into a crazy Xmas pageant of sorts ... weird, but cool!

AN EVENING OF ARGENTINE TANGO MUSIC
at the Mechanics Institute Library

Sylvie Braitman & Roberto Forte, voice
Cem Duruöz, guitar

Although I was disappointed to see that the evening did not include any dancing, Sylvie, Roberto, and Cem more than made up for it with their inspired and endearing performances, along with entertaining interpretations of the music.

Sat., Nov. 10, 2001

The Golden Gate Geographic Society
presents
ESCAPE TO FRANCE!
at the Paramount Theater

Produced & Presented IN PERSON by Dwayne L. Merry, Ph.D.

This turned out to be a live, narrated slide show of Dr. Merry's travels through France. Although intended for an older crowd, it was still interesting. I especially enjoyed the pictures of the bloodless bull-fighting and gypsy dancers in southern France. And, it was my first time seeing the Paramount on the inside ... I never imagined it would be such a fine example of ART DECO! Wow. That's what I'd call ART DEC'D OUT! Fantastic.

Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos

In Association with the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Present
ENSAYO
Conceived and Choreographed by Yaelisa
Music by Arvo Pärt, Mompou, and Jason McGuire "El Rubio"
Photography by Lena Herzog
Lighting Design by Matthew Antaky

Imaginative and creative! The choreography was breathtaking, and the guitarist, unbelievable! A night filled to the brim with music, dancing, and attitude! I absolutely loved it!

Tues., Oct. 10, 2001
San Francisco, CA
STOMP
At the Marines Memorial Theater

Very exciting choreography and rhythms ... it's amazing what people can do with a lot of talent and only a little bit of props/resources. I think just about anyone would enjoy this show!
