Beautiful and well-written coming of age story, set in the racially charged South in 1964. However, the story is not so much about divisions based on race as it is about how individuals can rise above whatever oppression and prejudices may surround them. It also demonstrates the power of sisterhood for women, as well as the full lives that women can live if they choose to fully act on their dreams rather than blindly following society's twisted path of expectations. Very inspirational for independent women! Highly recommended!

A great story, well-written and not depressing at all! The author does a wonderful job of creating suspense. And the characters are happily quite multi-dimensional. And the details appear well-researched, so you feel like you're LEARNING ABOUT HISTORY while reading. Plus, it's a quick and easy read. What's not to like? Highly recommended!

I liked the plot and some of the writing was good, especially at the end. But looking back, I don't know how the author managed to tell this story in so MANY pages! Although I haven't seen it, I'm thinking the movie is probably a lot better than the book ... there are so many other good books out there to read, I don't really recommend this one.

This book started out really slow, and it was very hard to connect to at first. But the second third of the book was really good. I liked the story about Sammy Clay and Tracy Bacon, and the story of Joe Kavalier in Antarctica. Unfortunately, the book didn't stay good, as the last third went back to "disappointingly dull." I can see that it was the product of thorough historic research, and some parts of it were artistic and beautiful to read (and I guess that's why it won a Pulitzer), but I'd say that at least 60% of the book was a real chore to get through. So I'll have to give this a MAYBE. There were some good things about it, but given the amount of time one needs to invest to read the whole thing, I wouldn't whole-heartedly recommend it.

This is a book of magazine articles written by Shinnyo-En founder Shinjo Ito and first published sometime between 1976 and 1979. I found it more accessible and easier to read than other Buddhist texts. Most of it still doesn't make much sense to me; I'm hoping to read more religious books to get a better understanding of the philosophy behind religions.

Intriguing, well-told story. The ending is a little lackluster, but I'm only talking about like the last 3 pages. Other than that, it was a GREAT READ. Two thumbs up!

Good story and a fun read. I thought the ending was a total cop-out on the part of the writer, but at least it made for some interesting discussions! Recommended as a fast and fun, light read.
